The first edition of the European Freestyle Pro Kids has been a huge success. If numbers have a meaning, here you are ours: 7 days of competition, 4 days of strong wind, 4 double eliminations, 5 new European Champions.
Day 1
Everything starts on Monday, 17th June, when the new generation of freestylers came together at Sporting Club Sardinia in Porto Pollo for the first skippers' meeting. Immediately after registration everybody moved to Murta Maria, south of Olbia, approximately 70 km from Porto Pollo. A strong SE wind is starting to blow and Murta is the perfect place to get it, with flat water and all the wind you need just centimeters from the sandy beach!
At noon the first heat of the event started, and two hours later we have the first results. Filippo Bestetti is the winner of the double elimination in the Junior group (born in 1989-1990); Vittorio Mazzocca wins the Super Grommets class (born in 1991-1992) and Matteo Testa leads the Grommets class (born in 1993-1995). But the real winner of the day is the perfect spot of Murta Maria: a real freestyle playground that everybody enjoyed.
Day 2
The second day of the Starboard Freestyle Pro Kids Europe 2007 is a kind of deja-vu: strong easterly wind and a new moving to Murta Maria. Wind is weaker than yesterday so the biggest riders are obliged to unroll their 5.9 sails. But the action is hot anyway: everybody is getting more and more used to the Sardinian conditions and high level moves are on the menu. Puneta, E-Slide, Chacho Switch, Funnel, Shaka... but also the younger riders show at least Vulcans, Spock, Grubby and Speed Loops.
With the wind slightly rotating to the east, conditions are deteriorating so that the Race Director decides to stop competition after the single elimination, and winners of the day are: Bestetti (Junior), Fabrizi (Super Grommets) and Testa (Grommets).
Day 3
After two days of strong wind and hard work, finally we stay in Porto Pollo with light winds and the opportunity to enjoy the nice venue. Following a lazy morning, after lunch we start the Gemini Cup, using the new Starboard Gemini, tandem boards which allows two windsurfers to ride the same board at the same time. Pumping is the necessary and everybody wants to win, regardless of rules and fair play... After two hours of real fight, winners are the Testa brothers, in front of Banfo team and other two family teams: Cappuzzo team (Alice riding with his father Antonio) and Nava team (Camilla and his father Franz, which is one of the judges of the ProKids competition).
At 16:00 the wind rotates to the west and with the first gust finally also the kids (born before 1996) can start to compete. In the male group the winner is Francesco Cappuzzo (who in the previous days asked to compete also in the Grommet group against older riders), whilst in the female group the winner is 10 years old Lucrezia Genazzani.
Day 4
Today is the so-called Coluccia Day. The competition moves to Coluccia, a nice freestyle spot nearby Porto Pollo, well-known for the perfect conditions and for being the home spot of the Italian Freestyle Vice Champion Stefanino Lorioli, who today will be part of the judging panel. With the westerly winds starting to blow, Coluccia is the perfect place to be.
Competition re-started from the looser round of the second elimination.
With the wind blowing side shore in the 20-25 knots range, the double elimination comes to a easy end, with Filippo Bestetti, Mattia Fabrizi and Matteo Testa who successfully defend their first position.
But there is still some wind, and the competition goes on with the third round to complete another single elimination, and new winners but Matteo Testa: Fabio Vinante gets his first win in front of Filippo Bestetti in the Junior class and Vittorio Mazzocca gets the led in the Super Grommets.
Day 5
Light wind and a lazy day for the competitors of the Starboard Freestyle Pro Kids Europe. Weather forecast for tomorrow are for strong wind, so everybody tries to get it easy and enjoy another round of the Gemini Cup. Winner of the day is the Nava team, with the westerly wind which already has started to blow. Tomorrow will be a tough day!
Day 6
Strong westerly wind, clear blue flat water, crowd on the sandy beach and a competition to complete: Porto Pollo is on fire.
First heat of the looser round of the third elimination starts at 10.30. Last heat of the looser round of the fourth (!) elimination ends at 16.30. A tough day for the competitors with a lot of suspence.
If the Grommet class has been dominated by Matteo Testa, we have had to wait the last final to know names of the winner of the older classe. After an incredible fight, Filippo Bestetti and Vittorio Mazzocca gets the title of European Champions. But all the riders showed a super high level, and also they improved a lot in their competition attitude during this week.
At late afternoon the beach ceremony crowned the European Champions:
- Filippo Bestetti (Juniors)
- Vittorio Mazzocca (Super Grommets)
- Matteo Testa (Grommets)
- Francesco Cappuzzo (Kids)
- Lucrezia Genazzani (Kids)
